Should I DIY My Own Newborn Photo Shoot?

– It’s no doubt that having a
new baby can feel expensive. As well as all the
things you’ve got to buy, like cots, car seats, prams,
clothes, nappies, you name it, you might also be facing a period of time with a reduced income
while you or your partner has some time off work. And if you’re in this kind of situation, you might start thinking
about how to save money. And you might think, “I know! “Instead of booking a
professional newborn photo shoot, “I’ll take the photos myself.” But before you make that decision, there are three things I
think it’s worth considering. First of all, how newborn babies are posed and photographed safely
by newborn photographers. Second, the kind of equipment that goes into taking
those photos yourself. And third, whether you want to be in the photographs yourself. So in this video, I’m gonna dive deeper into each of those considerations and I hope it helps you
make an informed decision about whether you take your
photos yourself at home or whether you book a shoot with a professional photographer. So first of all, how are
newborn babies photographed and posed safely? One of the most important skills that a pose newborn photographer has is knowing how to pose a baby safely. A little bit of wrong
placement here or there could cause too much pressure on a limb causing the blood supply to
fingers or toes being disrupted. It could cause the head or
neck not being supported. It could actually hurt or make
your baby very uncomfortable. Now this kind of skill, knowing
how to pose the baby safely and comfortably for them, is
something that’s only learned with time, training, and experience. It’s likely that most
newborn photographers will have done considerable training and photographed many, many babies as they practiced to
learn how to do it safely. For this reason, I don’t recommend that you ever try the
pose newborn photographs at home on your new baby. Instead, you could stick
to simple photographs that will still capture them beautifully so you can photograph them while they’re safely
held in an adult’s arms, in their crib or something
like the Sleepyhead, or even on a play mat on the floor. The other thing to consider is that not all newborn
photographs are what they seem. Many newborn photographs that you see where a baby is perhaps
propping their head up on their hands or
they’re hanging in a swing are never actually made that way. What a skilled photographer will do is take multiple photos of your baby being supported in different ways and then merge them all
together in Photoshop to create that final photo that you see. For that reason, you
should never, ever try to recreate these
positions yourself at home. So the next consideration is,
what equipment to you need to create those beautiful
newborn photographs that you see? Actually, it’s more than
just having a camera. Most photographers will
also use a couple of lenses, so one for most of the photographs and then a macro lens for taking
all those close-up details like fingers, toes, and eyelashes, all the little bits you want to remember. They’ll also have lighting equipment if they don’t use natural light. And they’ll also have a large beanbag, and or lots of props to put your baby in to photograph them safely. And blankets, wraps, and
outfits for your baby to dress them in, too. All of this equipment can cost
thousands of pounds in total and it would be very difficult
to recreate the photos you see photographers taking
without the equipment there. So the last consideration
is, do you want to appear in the photographs with your newborn baby? Now one of the number one problems that families come to me with is that they just want one
or two nice photographs of all of them together. We take so many photos of
our children these days. We’ve all got cameras
and phones and laptops full of photographs of our children, but what most of us don’t have are nice photographs of all of us together that aren’t selfies. So if you do decide to DIY your
newborn photo shoot at home then one of the things
you might want to do is arrange for someone else to come ’round in those early weeks to
take some photographs of the whole family together. It’s such a precious time and I’m sure you’ll look back and be really happy that you
have those photographs there. So I hope you found this video helpful as you decide whether to take your photos of your newborn baby yourself or whether to book a
professional newborn photo shoot. If you have any other questions about newborn photography,
