How Common are Joint Replacements? – Reston Hospital Center

(slow music) – Knee replacement
surgeries are very common. What I’ve seen over the years, and I’ve been in prior
practices since 2000, is there’s been that subset of
patients who are very active, who are anywhere from
45 to 65 years of age, who really do not want to give in to a total knee arthroplasty. The younger you are, we have
for years, told patients to wait longer, wait longer, because a full knee replacement
is not only a big operation, but if it’s done at a young
age, let’s say 45, 50, 55, it may only last 10, 15 years and then you have a
second very big operation with higher complication
rates at that time. So, this type of procedure,
which is a partial replacement, allows us to treat these younger patients, patients who are 45, 55, 65,
who have isolated arthritis to one compartment, who are not ready for a full knee replacement,
this allows us to treat them, alleviate their pain, allow
them to be much more active. Partial knee replacements
have been around a long time. The issue that partial
replacements had, historically, was that it was very hard
to place these implants in such a way that they were precise to the patient’s knee anatomy. And so, failure rates for this
procedure was unacceptable. And so, for many of us,
we abandon that procedure or we’re not happy with
these prior results. With robotic surgery, it
allows us to be very exact, very precise to within a millimeter and with that success, have
come very good longterm results on longevity of these implants, on satisfaction of the
patients with the procedure. And so, you’re seeing
thousands and thousands of partial knee replacements
being done in this country because of the improvement
in our technology. So, it is a tool that has
allowed us to be much more successful in treating patients
to alleviate their pain and keeping them functional and avoiding a full knee
replacement at a young age. (slow music)
